When I was ten, my dad gathered our family around the table in small-town Vermont and told us we were moving to the big desert city of Phoenix, Arizona. We were leaving behind family, friends, and everything familiar. None of us knew what to expect.

But something beautiful happened. As we made the move together, our family grew closer. In retrospect, I’m amazed at my parents’ courage to go on that adventure. Even as a kid I realized our family found, in that challenge, a deeper unity and mutual love.

Jesús y su familia saben lo que es emigrar, cambiar de lugar y moverse con rapidez porque son perseguidos. Ellos vivieron en carne propia los efectos de esta situación. Quizá nosotros tenemos algún familiar o amigo que actualmente sufre las penurias de dejar su hogar, su escuela o su trabajo. José y María huyen por la amenaza de peligro que pesaba sobre ellos: "Levántate, toma al niño y a su madre, y huye a Egipto. Quédate allí hasta que yo te avise, porque Herodes buscará al niño para matarlo" (Mateo 2:13).

Hermanos y hermanas, Algo se avecina — ¡un Nuevo Día está amaneciendo!

Como dice la Escritura: "Erguíos y levantad la cabeza, porque se aproxima vuestra redención." LC. 21:28

Que esta temporada de Adviento sea un momento de reƲexión y de inspiración para cada uno de nosotros. Encontremos la calma de la temporada mientras buscamos la reconciliación con nuestro Dios y nuestro prójimo. ¡Regocijémonos en el Don de Jesús, el Mesías, ¡nuestra esperanza!

As Scripture says: “Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.” Lk. 21:28

May this Advent Season be a reflective and thought-provoking time for each and everyone of us. Let us encounter the calm of the season as we seek reconciliation with our God and neighbor.

En este tercer domingo de Adviento escuchamos en el Evangelio: «He aquí que envío mi mensajero delante de ti, el cual preparará tu camino delante de ti». Esto se refiere a Juan el Bautista, pero en muchos sentidos, María, la primera discípula, también prepara el camino para que lleguemos a Jesús.

El lunes pasado celebramos la solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María.

In this 3rd Sunday of Advent we hear from the gospel: “Behold,.I.am.sending.my.messenger.ahead.of.you;. he.will.prepare.your.way.before.you.” This is referring to John the Baptist, but in many ways, Mary, the first disciple, also prepares the way for us to come to Jesus.

This past Monday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

En este primer domingo de Adviento, tantos siglos después de la época de Cristo, hay una pregunta pertinente que podríamos plantearnos. ¿Cuál es la razón principal de nuestra fe en Jesucristo? Muchos cristianos, quizás la mayoría, dirían que tener fe es esencial si se desea llegar al cielo. Se cree ampliamente que mantener la fe es la forma de evitar las llamas eternas del fuego y, por lo tanto, obtener la vida eterna. Por eso, muchas personas se centran en «salvarse», lo que se considera un asunto estrictamente individual. Pero Dios en Cristo está redimiendo al mundo, no solo inoculando a las personas una por una. La fe es confiar en el amor de Dios y vivir para el cumplimiento futuro de los propósitos redentores de Dios para la creación.

On this First Sunday of Advent, so many centuries after the time of Christ, there is a pertinent question we might consider. What is the primary reason for our faith in Jesus Christ? Many Christians, perhaps a majority, would say that having faith is essential if one wishes to have heaven as a destination. Keeping the faith, it is widely thought, is how one avoids the eternal flames of fire, and is thus granted eternal life. And so, the focus of many people is “getting saved,” which is seen as a strictly individual matter. But God in Christ is redeeming the world, not merely inoculating individuals one by one. Faith is trusting in God’s love and living for the future fulfillment of God’s redemptive purposes for creation.

No hace mucho, me llamaron a un hospital para ungir a una mujer de unos 80 años. Estaba muriendo y se notaba que tenía dolor. Pero lo que más me impactó no fue su sufrimiento, sino el ambiente que había en la habitación. Tenía ocho hijos y 30 hijos adoptivos, y muchos de ellos estaban reunidos a su alrededor. Cabría esperar tristeza, miedo, tal vez incluso desesperación. Pero la habitación estaba llena de algo completamente diferente: una fuerza tranquila, una especie de dulzura. Era como si ella no solo estuviera sufriendo con ellos, sino por ellos. Y ellos, con amor, estaban sufriendo por ella. El dolor era real. Pero también lo era la paz. No quería huir. Me sentía como si estuviera en un pequeño paraíso, con máquinas pitando y todo.

Not long ago, I was called to a hospital to anoint a woman in her early 80s. She was dying, and visibly in pain. But what struck me most wasn’t her suffering — it was the atmosphere in the room. She had eight children and 30 foster kids, and many of them were gathered around her. You’d expect sorrow, fear, maybe even despair. But the room was filled with something else entirely — a quiet strength, a kind of sweetness. It was as if she was suffering not just with them, but for them. And they, in love, were suffering for her. The pain was real. But so was the peace. I didn’t want to run. I felt as if I was in a little paradise, beeping machines and all.

When I was a kid growing up in New England, I’d occasionally go on a whale watch. Once we went out with calm waters and clear skies. But on the way back in, the sea got rough. I was just a kid, and I remember thinking we should turn left or right toward the shoreline I could see. But the pilot of the boat kept going straight — right into the waves — focused on a small, discouragingly distant lighthouse. Even when it flickered in and out of sight, he stayed the course. He knew where he was going.

La perseverancia, ¿qué significa esta palabra tan importante? Es mantenernos firmes en nuestros planes y buenos propósitos. Perseverar en los estudios, en el trabajo y en las relaciones familiares requiere entusiasmo y energía cada día. Nada es fácil, y hoy Jesús nos invita a no tener miedo ante las adversidades y catástrofes que vemos actualmente, sino a superar las pruebas con fe y confianza en un Dios que no defrauda: "Con todo, ni un cabello de su cabeza se perderá". Y agrega otra frase que nos invita a despertar del letargo espiritual: "Manténganse firmes y se salvarán" (Lucas 21:18-19).

This Sunday's Gospel, according to Saint John, places us in an episode close to the Jewish Passover (Jn 2:13-22), in which the Jewish people commemorated their liberation from slavery in Egypt. In this celebration, animal sacrifices were offered for the forgiveness of the sins of individuals and the community, and it was also a way of drawing closer to God.

Jesus is indignant when he sees the way the people and the merchants are behaving, and he begins to drive out the merchants who were in the temple, saying to them, “Take all these things away; do not make my Father’s house a marketplace” (Jn 2:16).

El evangelio de este domingo el evangelista San Juan nos sitúa en un episodio cerca a la pascua judía (Jn.2:13-22), en la cual el pueblo judío recordaba la liberación de la esclavitud en Egipto, en esta celebración se ofrecían sacrificios de animales para el perdón de los pecados de las personas y de la comunidad, y también era una forma de acercarse a Dios.

Jesús se indigna al ver la manera en que se comporta el pueblo y los comerciantes, comienza a echar fuera a los comerciantes que estaban en el templo diciéndoles “Quiten todo de aquí y no conviertan en un mercado la casa de mi Padre” (Jn. 2:16).

Al reunirnos para celebrar la Fiesta de los Fieles Difuntos, me conmueve profundamente la tranquilidad que este día sagrado nos brinda. En nuestra tradición católica, el 2 de noviembre se dedica a honrar y orar por todos los fieles difuntos, nuestros seres queridos, nuestros antepasados e incluso aquellos que no tienen a nadie que rece por ellos. Es un hermoso y solemne recordatorio de que, en Cristo, la muerte no termina nuestra historia, la transforma.

Dear Parish and School Families,

As we gather to celebrate the Feast of All Souls, my heart is drawn to the quiet moments of remembrance that this sacred day invites. In our Catholic tradition, November 2nd is set aside to honor and pray for all the faithful departed, our loved ones, our ancestors, and even those who have no one left to pray for them by name. It is a beautiful and solemn reminder that in Christ, death does not end our story, it transforms it.
