When We Are Overwhelmed

Facing difficult challenges can be a stimulating experience, inspiring the best in us. But this is the case only if we have resources or skills appropriate to the challenge. Gifted athletes faced with the challenge of participating in the Olympic Games might be motivated to their finest effort. But handicapped persons could not even consider such a challenge. Instead of being inspired, they might be overwhelmed to even think about such a feat.

Jesus’ disciples had an overwhelming experience in today’s Gospel reading. They were surrounded by a crowd of more than five thousand hungry people. They were in a remote area, and no food was available. How could such a multitude possibly be fed? Their only solution was for the people to disperse to the nearest villages and buy food. Jesus said, “There is no need to disperse. Give them something to eat.” The disciples had already considered that option, and knew exactly how much food was available, five pieces of bread and two fish. In their hands they held barely enough food for one person, and Jesus expected them to feed thousands! If they took Jesus’ command seriously, they must have felt monumentally inadequate!

Jesus asks us to give whatever we have to him and to his work. He welcomes our gifts whether they are large or small. A kind word spoken in love is more valuable than a big donation given grudgingly. Love for Christ and love for others makes everything go further.

Many of us have fantasized about what we would do if we suddenly inherited a million dollars. We imagine ourselves spending wisely and giving generously. But the truth of the matter is that we would be no more sensible or generous with our money than we are now.
