Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

A principios de este mes escuchamos estas palabras sobre la Solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María: "Por hoy ha sido elevada al cielo la Virgen Madre de Dios, anticipo e imagen de la perfección, que alcanzará tu Iglesia, garantía de consuelo y esperanza para tu pueblo, todavía peregrino en la tierra. Con razón no permitiste, Señor, que conociera la corrupción del sepulcro aquélla, que, de un modo inefable, dio vida en su seno y carne de su carne a Tu Hijo, Autor de toda vida." ¡María es la Madre del Autor de toda vida! Ella, criatura, llevó en su seno a su Creador. Ella, la humilde y fiel Hija del Padre y Esposa del Espíritu Santo, dio a luz a Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, Aquel que es la Vida, la Verdad y el Camino.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Earlier this month we heard these words on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: “For today, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed to heaven as the beginning and image of your Church’s coming to perfection, and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people; rightly you would not allow her to see the corruption of the tomb since from her own body, she marvelously brought forth.

«Cristo será glorificado en mi cuerpo, ya sea por la vida o por la muerte. Porque para mí, la vida es Cristo y la muerte es ganancia», escribe Pablo a los cristianos de Filipos. Para comprender la profundidad de estas palabras, debemos verlas en su contexto. Pablo estaba en prisión a la espera de juicio. Se le presentaban dos posibilidades: podía ser puesto en libertad o podía ser ejecutado. Así pues, Pablo dice: «Suceda lo que suceda, ya viva o muera, lo importante es que Cristo sea honrado en mi cuerpo». Y la razón que aduce es que, para él, vivir es Cristo y morir es ganancia.

“Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain” writes Paul to the Christians in Philippi. To understand the depth of these words we need to see it in context. Paul was in prison awaiting trial. There were two possibilities before him: he might be released, but he also might be executed. So Paul says, whatever happens to me, whether I live or whether or I die, the important thing is that Christ will be honored in my body. And his rationale for saying so is that to him to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Pedro le pregunta a Jesús: «Señor, si mi hermano peca contra mí, ¿cuántas veces debo perdonarlo?». Pedro sugiere siete veces, pero Jesús responde: «No siete veces, sino setenta veces siete».

Jesús no nos pide que llevemos la cuenta. Nos recuerda que el perdón no es algo que ofrecemos solo cuando nos conviene o cuando la otra persona lo merece. El perdón es una forma de vida.

In today’s Gospel, Peter asks Jesus, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive?” Peter suggests seven times, but Jesus responds, “Not seven times but seventy-seven times.”

Jesus is not asking us to keep count. He is reminding us that forgiveness is not something we offer only when it is convenient or deserved. Forgiveness is a way of living.

A few summers ago, my family had a big reunion. It included my parents, my four siblings, and all their many children. One of my favorite moments was simply watching my parents’ contented faces as they took in all of us together, laughing, sharing food, singing, telling stories. They loved seeing their children happily together with each other.

Hoy la Liturgia nos anima a la corrección fraterna; es decir, nos alienta a corregir a las personas que obran mal. Este consejo parece ir contra la corriente actual de la sociedad, donde se cree que todo está permitido. Los padres tienen miedo de reprender a sus hijos y los maestros temen corregir a sus estudiantes, pues muchas veces responden con agresividad.

Do you know what it is like to be thrilled by the power of Christian faith one moment and then utterly fail in it the next? I do. That is Peter in today’s Gospel. After last week’s bold confession, he now hears Jesus speak of suffering and death, and something in him recoils. He takes Jesus aside and tries to correct him. Jesus responds with the shocking rebuke, “Get behind me, Satan.”

El seguimiento de Cristo implica también llevar la cruz. Y no se refiere a esas hermosas cruces de oro fino que llevamos en el cuello. Se trata de otro tipo de cruz: la cruz de cada día, en la familia, en el hospital, en la cárcel, en la lucha por los derechos de los inmigrantes y al dar voz a quienes no pueden defenderse, por mencionar solo algunos ejemplos.

La pregunta que Jesús hizo a sus discípulos fue: “Según el parecer de la gente, ¿quién es este Hijo del Hombre?”. La respuesta no se hizo esperar; presurosos respondieron: “unos dicen que Juan el Bautista, otros que Elías, o Jeremías, o alguno de los profetas”.

Enseguida vino otra pregunta: “Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?” (Mateo 16:13-17). Esta segunda pregunta ya es directa para los discípulos: quién es Jesús para cada uno de ellos.

The first time I stood inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, its majesty overwhelmed me. The sheer beauty of Michelangelo’s dome seemed to lift my soul right out of my body.

Later, I joined the Scavi tour that winds below the basilica, down into the ancient pagan cemetery where Peter was buried. There, in the dim light and narrow passageways, I found myself looking at the bones of a murdered Jewish fisherman, his feet cut off so his crucified body could be taken down more easily.

Este verano: ¡mantengámonos en oración! Con la llegada de esta bienvenida temporada de vacaciones de verano, necesitamos recordarnos que, aunque hagamos una pausa en nuestros horarios y rutinas de trabajo, y aunque sea un tiempo de descanso y relajación, no es un tiempo para tomar vacaciones —ni un descanso— de asistir a la Santa Misa y recibir la Eucaristía, ni para dejar de lado nuestras oraciones diarias, especialmente el Rosario.

This summer, let us: “Stay prayed up!” With this welcomed season of summer vacations, we need to remind ourselves, as we break from our work schedules and routines, that, although, it is a time for rest and relaxation, it is not a time for us to take a vacation - a break - from attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist, nor putting off our daily prayers, especially, the Rosary.

As a young, newly ordained priest, I admired a senior priest who was gifted, beloved, and had changed countless lives. But soon I learned that he had fallen in catastrophic and destructive ways. The painful juxtaposition of good and evil was complex to process. How could someone so seemingly good also be so broken and deceptive? It forced me to confront a sobering truth: leadership in the Church is no guarantee against weakness or sin.

No sé si alguna vez en tu vida has tenido miedo a algo o a alguien, y te has dado cuenta de que el miedo paraliza: no te deja avanzar, incluso te ciega y no te permite ver. Muchas veces, las causas del miedo son falsas y solo sirven para amedrentar a la persona y dejarla sin esperanza. El miedo también nos quita la paz y nos impide hacer planes para el futuro.

Enfrentarse a desafíos difíciles puede ser una experiencia estimulante que inspira lo mejor de nosotros. Pero esto solo ocurre si contamos con recursos o habilidades adecuadas para el reto. Los atletas talentosos que se enfrentan al reto de participar en los Juegos Olímpicos pueden estar motivados hasta dar lo mejor de sí. Pero las personas discapacitadas ni siquiera podrían considerar tal desafío. En lugar de sentirse inspirados, podrían sentirse abrumados incluso de pensar en tal hazaña.

Facing difficult challenges can be a stimulating experience, inspiring the best in us. But this is the case only if we have resources or skills appropriate to the challenge. Gifted athletes faced with the challenge of participating in the Olympic Games might be motivated to their finest effort. But handicapped persons could not even consider such a challenge. Instead of being inspired, they might be overwhelmed to even think about such a feat.
